Except for OC Register and Nguoi Viet Daily Newspaper who had articles about our parade, the rest if the Vietnamese press did not respond to our press releases. The Vietnamese Interfaith Council were silent on our participation. There were no threats of tomatoes throwing this year either. One VP of some organization claiming to represent the Vietnamese American community of Southern California predicted that no one will show up to the panel discussion because when Vietnamese people don't like something, they will just ignore it.

We had about 60 people marching with us this year. They lined us near the end of the parade at #75. We were still waiting to march when parade watchers were walking home. Once again the announcer stumbled on our script and didn't finish reading it. They took the time to comment on the two dogs that marched with us and the two motorcycle cops instead. I didn't hear any vocal boos but the crowd didn't seem as large as last year and audience cheering us on didn't seem as large as last year. Some of our people said they heard someone shouted, "Go home!" to us. Rumor has it that even though the religious folks didn't have a press conference to denounce and boycott us, they did ask their followers to not show up to the parade.

We had an estimated 70 people to show up for lunch and the food, especially the goi/salad, was excellent.

About 60 something people remained for the panel discussion. We went over 3:30 pm and ended the program close to 4 pm. Everyone pitched in to clean up and it was fast! Thank you!

If you have anything else to report, or links to alert us of reports of the events, please post them here.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729603799793845340.post-87122250184156329372011-02-07T00:26:00.000-08:002016-05-06T18:08:39.451-07:00Press Release for Tet Feb. 5, 2011FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“UNITED IN LOVE”, PARTNERSHIP OF VIETNAMESE LGBT ORGANIZATIONS WILL MARCH IN THE 2011 WESTMINSTER TET PARADE
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5TH, 2011 IN ORANGE COUNTY
ORANGE COUNTY (CA) – Chuc Mung Nam Moi! –After enduring opposition from the 2010 Westminster Tet Parade, the Partnership of Vietnamese Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Organizations returns strong in 2011. On February 5, we march to the theme "United in Love." We follow with a luncheon and panel discussion on “LGBTs and Religion.”
Tet is the most important holiday of our Vietnamese community. It is a time for families to reunite and renew love for one another. The Partnership of Vietnamese LGBTs chose this year’s theme, “United in Love,” to reflect our commitment to unite people from every walk of life. Religious speakers from various faiths will join us in this historic event.
Last year’s teen gay suicides touched us all very deeply. We urge community members to please take action to prevent any more deaths from suicide in the LGBT community. We plan to march together, "break bread", and have communion with religious leaders who are accepting and loving of all community members. We shall march, eat and talk with one another to celebrate our existence and our survival through struggles as Vietnamese LGBTs and allies.
However, several had to leave before the parade started due to prior commitments. In the end, we had 27 people, comprising 12 lesbians and 15 gays taking part in the parade.

Thank you Ly’, Pauline, Kim Loan, Tawnya (Thanh) and Thanh Do for recruiting people to march in the parade with us.

A big thank to our good friends: Jerry from South Bay Queer and Asian, Tawal from API Equality, Chris from Equality California, along with Sissourh and Felicia who also came to support and march with us. They were eager to do anything to help make our contingent strong and for the march to go smoothly. They were impressed by our banners with strong slogans such as "Straight, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender: We are Family", "Parents, Love ALL your children", "Support Same-Sex Marriage: Equality for ALL".

The Vietnamese-American LGBT contingent has achieved success in bringing visibility for the Vietnamese-American LGBT community to the Vietnamese-American community at large. This is evident in the cheers that we received along the parade route, and the biggest cheer came when the contingent was introduced in front of the grandstand.

A member of our contingent did notice that we received just one single "boo" during the entire parade. However, he also noticed a glimmer of hope in the eyes of one of the observers along the route as well.

There is also one moving and lasting image in our contingent: A mother brought her young son to come and march with our LGBT contingent. After that, she took several of our group's placards with statements such as "Equality for All - Bình đẳng cho mọi người", "Love and Support your children", etc. Then along with her other younger son walked along the parade route on the sidewalk with the signs to encourage support for our contingent.

At the end of the parade, we all just wanted to exult: TOGETHER, WE MADE IT.

By marching at the San Jose Tet Parade, the LGBT contingent fulfilled some of our goals such as:

1) present a positive image of Vietnamese-American LGBT in the community which will hopefully help parents to accept and support their LGBT children more

2) raise awareness about the presence of Vietnamese-American LGBT in the Vietnamese-American Community and about being a part of the larger Vietnamese family

3) open the (closet) door for Vietnamese-American LGBT in the community

4) give a message of respect for diversity and freedom to the younger generation

5) raise awareness about the need to legalize same-sex marriage, as it is a freedom and a civil right issue

However, the purpose of the march is not so that we can achieve our goals, rather it is also to pave the ways for the next generation of LGBTs so that they can live openly, happily, without fear or discrimination.

We would also like to thank Ms. Lou Johnson who videotaped our contingent in the parade. He said it would be okay if HDLT just withdrew from the event, but it was so WRONG to ask their believers to boycott the event as a whole.

Nguyen Phuong Hung is not a gay-friendly himself but he did give positive feedback about us in the parade as "cheerful and respectful folks."

Amen.
_________________
Nguyễn Phương Hùng
Board AdministratorViet LGBTIQhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06394396820373580407noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729603799793845340.post-8993084537393992192010-02-24T18:58:00.001-08:002010-02-24T18:58:43.344-08:00What we are hearing elsewherehttp://dcagenda.com/2010/02/grabbing-the-tigers-tail/Viet LGBTIQhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06394396820373580407noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729603799793845340.post-42268057054157624402010-02-21T19:14:00.000-08:002010-02-21T19:16:27.784-08:00Our responsesResponse from Derek Trần:
http://www.nguoi- viet.com/ absolutenm/ anmviewer. asp?a=108605&z=12Viet LGBTIQhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06394396820373580407noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729603799793845340.post-7477456672728707062010-02-15T18:09:00.000-08:002010-02-15T18:10:38.388-08:00What we are hearing around townQuote: "...Đặc biệt năm nay có sự góp mặt của đoàn diễn hành của những người đồng tính. It is an occasion for Vietnamese people to share a common ideal of peace, kindness, and prosperity. This is a time when families gather to celebrate a festive holiday that is filled with love, hope, and joy in welcoming the New Year. Vietnamese cultural values are based on family unity and cohesiveness. People who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) are also part of Vietnamese families. We are born into families, and we live our lives with our families. We are your sisters, brothers, sons, and daughters. We also attend service at temples and churches and many of us consider ourselves very devout and spiritual. Tết is one of the many ways that we celebrate our collective Vietnamese culture.
Around Tết when the New Year arrives, Vietnamese people graciously try to eliminate their old negative way of thinking. We do things to create auspicious energy to start the year full of possibility and good will towards others. It is unfortunate for the religious leaders planning on boycotting the parade because they will be missing out on the collective celebration of happiness and joy. The major religious teachings emphasize peace with oneself and to “love thy neighbor as thyself”. Religious and spiritual leaders should be role models for society in establishing bridges of understanding and love, not encouraging separation and intolerance amongst one another. Excluding oneself or others from the Tết parade is being socially irresponsible and does not foster a positive atmosphere in celebrating Tết and in building a stronger community.
Because we are part of the Vietnamese community, we feel that we, LGBT people, have the right to join our families and fellow Vietnamese in celebration of Tết. There is no better time to be united with our families within the Vietnamese community. The Interfaith Council and City Councilman Andy Quách would like to dictate who is and is not Vietnamese and who can or cannot celebrate Tết. That type of thinking is very backward. It is time to embrace the new world of freedom.
We have many reasons for peacefully and cheerfully marching in the parade. We wish to exhibit love and harmony to the Vietnamese people in wishing them a happy and prosperous new year. Some LGBT people are fortunate to have parents and siblings who acknowledge and accept them for who they are. Most Vietnamese LGBT people grow up in families that reject them, causing deep sorrow and suffering. We are determined to be visible at the Tết parade to make the lives of our LGBT brothers and sisters easier, to increase the Vietnamese community’s awareness that we are here and we are part of you – we are not mentally ill or immoral. We want to urge the community to support same-sex marriage because we are family members of the Vietnamese people. Most of all, we hope to march proudly in the Tết parade to promote love, support, good will, prosperity, and justice for everyone.

May love, understanding, and compassion prevail,
Sống Thật Radio, Ô-Môi, Gay Vietnamese Alliance,
and The Vietnamese Lesbian and Bisexual Women Network and FriendsViet LGBTIQhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06394396820373580407noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729603799793845340.post-63306672341951321212010-02-14T20:21:00.000-08:002010-02-15T12:23:34.069-08:00Pre-Parade Thoughts and ExperiencesPlease respond to this post to share your experiences of the days before the march.

Here are links to articles about Andy Quach and The Vietnamese Interfaith Council of America opposing us.

http://www.nguoi-viet.com/absolutenm/anmviewer.asp?a=108146&z=R1

http://www.ocregister.com/news/vietnamese-233820-groups-parade.html

We made the Advocate Page:
http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2010/02/12/The_Battle_Over_Little_Saigon/Viet LGBTIQhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06394396820373580407noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729603799793845340.post-12475501694880961132010-02-14T19:47:00.000-08:002010-02-16T00:40:49.882-08:00Purpose of this BlogThe purpose of this Blog is to create a space to document our experiences at the Tết Canh Dần in Little Saigon, Westminster, CA this February 13, 2010. We also want to highlight our experiences that cut through the racism, anti-immigrant and homophobia that are sometimes yelled out by non-Vietnamese LGBTIQs or by straight Vietnamese.

This is the first time that the Viet LGBTIQ group is marching in Little Saigon Tết Parade. We have marched in San Jose since 2004, but this is the first time in epicenter of Vietnamese America. Prior to this experience Ô-Môi (the Vietnamese queer female network) and GVA (Gay Vietnamese Alliance) have marched in the Orange County Pride Parade. Some of us have also marched many times in the Los Angeles Pride Parade and Los Angeles Chinatown New Year Parade. To walk in Little Saigon as out Vietnamese LGBTIQ, however, is the first for all of us.

Led by our fearless leader, Chị Vương (Old Sister Vuong), and excellently coordinated by our coordinator Thanh Đỗ who is also our articulate Public Relations person, we registered with the City of Westminster to march in the parade as an LGBTIQ group. We sent out press releases to the Vietnamese news media on Sunday 2/7/2010. Some of us were called for interviews on Monday and Tuesday. Then Wednesday 2/10/2010, we heard that Westminster Councilman Andy Quách, who is also president of the Tết Parade committee, had sent a press release to the Vietnamese newspaper decrying our participation in the parade. The Vietnamese Interfaith Council led by Lutheran Pastor Trần Thanh Vân called for a press conference the next day (Thursday 2/11/2010 10:30 am) to denounce our participation and asked all religious organizations to pull out of the parade if we were to be there. In the background, Dina Nguyễn, Garden Grove Councilwoman and Andy Quách also called Thanh to ask that we withdraw our participation. We were angered by the narrow-mindedness and ignorance propagated by Little Saigon religious and political leaders. Even more determined to educate our community of the ignorance and misunderstanding of LGBTIQ Việt people, we set forth to march with great tension in the air. We rallied our friends and allies to come out and support us, and the most beautiful, last minute emailing, facebooking, and calling of friends and contacts happened. We must outnumber hate with a message of love.

Unclear whether we will encounter violent protest or a no show from our Vietnamese community, we met the night before the parade at The Center OC that Ginger Hahn had graciously offered to us, to create more positive signs of the new year spirit.

The day of the parade, the police sent four officers to keep a close eye on our contingent because they heard rumors that people were going to throw tomatoes at us. Our friends and allies came out in large number and helped us to a most peaceful, dignified march down the heart of Little Saigon. We heard more cheers than insults and it was most pleasing and heart warming to see our elders and vets waving at us and smiling. I have never been prouder to be Vietnamese and queer and to feel the connection and love from all of our friends and allies.Viet LGBTIQhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06394396820373580407noreply@blogger.com0
