Partnership of Vietnamese-American Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Organizations to march in Tet Spring Festival to increase community Awareness about our happy existence as well as our struggles for rights and acceptance in a free society and to pave the ways for the next generation of LGBTs so that they can live openly, happily, without fear, and discrimination or suffering depression that can lead to thoughts of suicide.

On Sunday, February 20, 2011, from 11 am to 1 pm, the Partnership of Vietnamese-American Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Organizations including Song That Radio, O-Moi and Gay Vietnamese Alliance will be marching in the 2011 Vietnamese Spring Festival & Parade in downtown San Jose to increase community awareness about our happy existence as well as our struggles for rights and acceptance in a free society. By marching at the 2011 Vietnamese Spring Festival & Parade, we also want to present a positive image of Vietnamese-American LGBT in the community which will hopefully help parents to accept and support their LGBT children more, opening the closet door for Vietnamese-American LGBT in the Community and paving the ways for the next generation of LGBTs so that they can live openly, happily, without fear, and discrimination or suffering depression that can lead to thoughts of suicide.

This march is also to demonstrate that there is a thriving Vietnamese-American LGBT community in the San Jose Bay Area and beyond.

About the Vietnamese LGBT groups:

Song That Radio is a grass-roots Vietnamese community organization, working to increase LGBT visibility and inclusivity in the community. Song That hosts a weekly Vietnamese-language radio program, focusing on enhancing community awareness of LGBT issues. Song That also organizes social and political events that aim to advocate for, support, and empower the Vietnamese-American LGBT community. Song That is based in San Jose.

O-moi is a support group for lesbians, bisexual women, and transgenders of Vietnamese descent. Our goal is to provide a support and resource space for queer, female Vietnamese to come out and network. O-Moi is based in Southern California.

Gay Vietnamese Alliance provides a safe and supportive environment for gay, bisexual, and transgendered men of Vietnamese descent from all over the world to network, voice issues, promote wellness and foster leadership. GVA is based in Northern California.

In our ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships with the mainstream Vietnamese and American society, we welcome dialog with the media and other community partners. To join us in the march, we will be meeting at:

WHEN: Sunday, February 20, 2011; The Parade starts at 11:00 AM, but Organizers want all units must arrive at Victory Parking Lot by 8:00 AM or at least before 9:00 AM

WHERE: Victory Parking Lot on Market Street, between E. Santa Clara and St. John (next to GumboJumbo Restaurant)

Report of the day's Events

Unlike last year boycott controversy, we got the silent treatment this year from the press. Except for OC Register and Nguoi Viet Daily Newspaper who had articles about our parade, the rest if the Vietnamese press did not respond to our press releases. The Vietnamese Interfaith Council were silent on our participation. There were no threats of tomatoes throwing this year either. One VP of some organization claiming to represent the Vietnamese American community of Southern California predicted that no one will show up to the panel discussion because when Vietnamese people don't like something, they will just ignore it.

We had about 60 people marching with us this year. They lined us near the end of the parade at #75. We were still waiting to march when parade watchers were walking home. Once again the announcer stumbled on our script and didn't finish reading it. They took the time to comment on the two dogs that marched with us and the two motorcycle cops instead. I didn't hear any vocal boos but the crowd didn't seem as large as last year and audience cheering us on didn't seem as large as last year. Some of our people said they heard someone shouted, "Go home!" to us. Rumor has it that even though the religious folks didn't have a press conference to denounce and boycott us, they did ask their followers to not show up to the parade.

We had an estimated 70 people to show up for lunch and the food, especially the goi/salad, was excellent.

About 60 something people remained for the panel discussion. We went over 3:30 pm and ended the program close to 4 pm. Everyone pitched in to clean up and it was fast! Thank you!

“UNITED IN LOVE”, PARTNERSHIP OF VIETNAMESE LGBT ORGANIZATIONS WILL MARCH IN THE 2011 WESTMINSTER TET PARADE
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5TH, 2011 IN ORANGE COUNTY
ORANGE COUNTY (CA) – Chuc Mung Nam Moi! –After enduring opposition from the 2010 Westminster Tet Parade, the Partnership of Vietnamese Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Organizations returns strong in 2011. On February 5, we march to the theme "United in Love." We follow with a luncheon and panel discussion on “LGBTs and Religion.”
Tet is the most important holiday of our Vietnamese community. It is a time for families to reunite and renew love for one another. The Partnership of Vietnamese LGBTs chose this year’s theme, “United in Love,” to reflect our commitment to unite people from every walk of life. Religious speakers from various faiths will join us in this historic event.
Last year’s teen gay suicides touched us all very deeply. We urge community members to please take action to prevent any more deaths from suicide in the LGBT community. We plan to march together, "break bread", and have communion with religious leaders who are accepting and loving of all community members. We shall march, eat and talk with one another to celebrate our existence and our survival through struggles as Vietnamese LGBTs and allies.
The 2011 Vietnamese LGBT Tet Celebration will proceed as follows:
Gathering:
9:00 AM. On Bolsa Avenue, west of Magnolia Street – look for us in the long line up.
The Parade:

ORANGE COUNTY (CA) - Chúc Mừng Năm Mới! -- Sau khi đối mặt với những sự chống đối trong cuộc diễn hành Tết tại thành phố Westminster vào năm 2010, liên hội những tổ chức đồng tính luyến ái, song tính, và điều chỉnh giới tính (ĐTLASTĐCGT) Mỹ gốc Việt trở nên vững mạnh hơn khi trở lại tham gia cuộc diễn hành năm 2011. Ngày 5 tháng hai, chúng tôi sẽ đi diễn hành với chủ đề "Hòa Hợp Trong Tình Yêu." Sau đó chúng tôi sẽ có một bữa ăn trưa và một buổi thảo luận với chủ đề "ĐTLASTĐCGT và Tôn Giáo."

Tết là ngày lễ quan trọng nhất của cộng đồng Việt Nam chúng ta. Đó là thời điểm dành cho xum họp gia đình và hâm nóng lại tình yêu dành cho nhau. Liên hội những tổ chức ĐTLASTĐCGT Việt Nam năm nay đã chọn chủ đề "Hòa Hợp Trong Tình Yêu" để phản ảnh tâm nguyện của chúng tôi là liên kết mọi người từ trên mọi nẻo đường của cuộc sống này lại với nhau. Những diễn giả thuộc các niềm tin tôn giáo khác nhau sẽ tham gia với chúng tôi trong sinh họat lịch sử này.

Trong năm vừa qua, con số các thiếu niên đồng tính luyến ái tự tử đã gây xúc động sâu đậm đến tất cả chúng ta. Chúng tôi kêu gọi mọi người trong cộng đồng hãy hành động để ngăn chặn việc xảy ra thêm những vụ tự tử trong cộng đồng ĐTLASTĐCGT. Chúng tôi dự định đi diễn hành, thực hiện nghi thức “bẻ bánh” và nghi thức hiệp thông cùng với các nhà lãnh đạo tôn giáo đã chấp nhận và yêu thương tất cả thành viên trong cộng đồng. Với tư cách là người ĐTLASTĐCGT và nhữngngười ủng hộ, chúng tôi sẽ đi diễn hành, ăn uống và nói chuyện với nhau để chào mừng sự hiện hữu của chúng tôi và sự tồn tại của chúng tôi qua nhiều gian khổ.
Chương trình mừng Tết 2011 của cộng đồng ĐTLASTĐCGT sẽ diễn ra như sau:

Tập trung:
9:00 giờ sáng. Trên đường Bolsa, phía tây của đường Magnolia – hãy tìm kiếm chúng tôi trong dòng người xếp hàng dài chờ đợi diễn hành.

Diễn hành:
9:30 giờ sáng. Khởi bước. Cuộc diễn hành sẽ bắt đầu tại góc đường Bolsa và Magnolia. Chúng tôi sẽ diễn hành dọc theo đường Bolsa, rẽ phải vào đường Bushard, và kết thúc tại đường Bishop. Lộ trình diễn hành có trên: http://www.westminster-ca.gov/civica/filebank/blobdload.asp?BlobID=7399

Sơ lược về các nhóm ĐTLASTĐCGT Việt Nam:

Sống Thật Radio là một cơ quan có quá trình gắn bó lâu dài với cộng đồngViệt Nam, với chủ trương nâng cao sự nhận thức và chấp nhận người ĐTLASTĐCGT trong cộng đồng. Sống Thật Radio đảm trách một chương trình phát thanh tiếng Việt hàng tuần, tập trung vào việc nâng cao ý thức của cộng đồng về các vấn đề liên quan tới người ĐTLASTĐCGT. Sống Thật Radio cũng tổ chức các sinh họat về xã hội và chính trị để bênh vực, hỗ trợ, và tạo sức mạnh cho cộng đồng ĐTLASTĐCGT Mỹ gốc Việt. Sống Thật Radio có trụ sở tại San Jose.

Ô-môi là một nhóm hỗ trợ dành cho người Đồng tính luyến ái Nữ, song tính Nữ và người điều chỉnh giới tính gốc Việt. Mục đích cuả chúng tôi là cung cấp 1 môi trường yểm trợ và thông tin cho người Đồng tính luyến ái Nữ, song tính Nữ và điều chỉnh giới tính gốc Việt để ra mặt và thiết lập mạng lưới sinh hoạt với nhau. Hội cũng nổ lực bênh vực cho quyền lợi và sự công khai được nhìn nhận của các thành viên. Hội Ô-môi có trụ sở tại miền Nam California.

Gay Vietnamese Alliance mang sứ mệnh là cung cấp 1 môi trường an toàn và yểm trợ cho người Đồng tính luyến ái Nam, song tính và điều chỉnh giới tính gốc Việt từ khắp nơi trên thế giới để thiết lập mạng lưới, lên tiếng tranh luận về những vấn đề, quảng bá cuộc sống lành mạnh và khích lệ phát triển tài lãnh đạo.
